Black Chickpeas recipe

Black Chickpeas also known as kala chana is widely used in Indian cuisine to make curries. This goes well with rice, roti/other bread and with Puttu( popular steamed rice cake recipe from the rich kerala cuisine or south Indian cuisine.) In Kerala, puttu is typically served for morning breakfast and is generally served with black chickpeas(kadala curry) and bananas.


Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 medium onions, chopped
  • 8 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2-inch ginger, minced
  • 1-sliced green chilli
  • Salt
  • 2 teaspoon Kashmiri chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 3 teaspoons coriander powder
  • 2 cups of black chickpeas
  • 3 tomatoes. 
  • Curry leaves -5-6
  • Whole red chilli-2

Instructions


Wash the black chana and soak in enough water for 6-8 hours. Drain the water and add the chana in a pressure cooker along with 2 cups of water and 2 tsp salt. Pressure cook until chana is nicely cooked. (Cook it for one whistle on high heat and then 3-4whistles on low heat).

Heat a pan and add oil . Once hot, add whole red chilli, bay and curry leaves and then add the onions and sauté for 5-6 minutes, or until lightly golden. Add garlic, ginger, whole green chili, sauté for about 5 minute. Now add coriander powder,turmeric powder, Kashmiri chili powder,Garam masala, salt and sauté for another minute.  Add the tomato paste and close the pan and allow it  to cook for 10 min. Now add the boiled chickpeas and boil it for 3 min.   Your kala chana is ready to be served! Hope you will try and enjoy with your family.
